Pillar of the Profession
Arthur “Art” Sandeen served as Vice President for Student Affairs from 1973 to 1999. During his illustrious career, he led the university through a time of unprecedented growth. He is best known for his zest for teaching and helping students succeed.
Born in Chicago in 1938, Art was educated in the public schools in Hinsdale, Illinois. He earned his B.A. degree in religion and psychology in 1960 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, his M.A. degree in college student personnel administration from Michigan State University in 1962, and his Ph.D. degree from Michigan State in 1965 in administration and higher education. In 1982, he was a Fulbright Scholar in West Germany, and in 1984, completed the Institute for Educational Management program at Harvard University.
Art served as a head resident advisor and coordinator of freshmen orientation at Michigan State University from 1962-65, and as Associate Director of Residence Hall Programs from 1965-67. From 1967-73, he served as Dean of Students and Associate Professor of Higher Education at Iowa State. In 1973, he was appointed Vice President for Student Affairs and Professor of Higher Education at the University of Florida and served in this position until August 1, 1999. He served as Professor of Educational Leadership and Coordinator of the graduate program in student personnel in higher education from 1999-2004. As the cornerstone of UF’s Division of Student Affairs, Art established a legacy and level of excellence that continues to draw top staff talent from across the nation. Most importantly, he built a tradition and expectation of excellence in serving and caring for students.
He is a true pillar of the profession, serving as the past National Association of Student Personnel Administrators president. He has received the Fred Turner Award, the Scott Goodnight Award, the NASPA Distinguished Pillar Award, and received the designation of Senior Scholar.
